Collecting Miniature Books

My interest in miniatures was sparked by a visit to the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago. I was so fascinated that I started to research and subsequently collect one inch scale fine miniatures of all descriptions. I would describe myself as a generalist. I assembled a wide range of miniatures including furniture, decorative accessories, toys, dolls and their clothing. This journey began in the early 1980’s.

The start of my miniature book collection began after discovering Barbara Raheb dollhouse scale books at an International Guild of Miniature Artisans. The allure of these Lilliputian works of art opened the wonderful world of miniature book collecting. The beautifully handmade bindings, unique designs and wide range of subject matter was limitless.  As my collection grew and, as I developed a more discerning eye, I began to focus on books that were letterpress.

Dollhouse scale books in my collection include mostly Barbara Raheb, Robert E. Massman, as well as Borrowers Press. The common thread of all, they are often hand colored , letterpress, imaginative, and frequently one of a kind.

My current display is ad hoc. The collection of books is housed in everything from a tall French antique glass display case to books placed on a salesman’s sample Hitchcock bench. I am designing a variety of period room boxes  as well as a dollhouse, one inch to a foot, which will eventually incorporate both my dollhouse scale books along with miniature fine furnishings .

I enjoy collecting for a variety of reasons. While there is always the thrill of the hunt, I find satisfaction in the constant research that collecting involves. The pleasure of organizing, cataloging, and arranging the individual books cannot be denied. At the back of my mind I am also creating a collection that may be enjoyed by future generations.

Woman in a Hat

Perhaps painted in one of Charles Webster Hawthorne’s famous Provincetown classes, these were the students’ first efforts . They were taught to capture the effects of sunlight one the figure using only large, simple masses of color. These were usually painted right on the beach as models posed in the glare of the full sun.

Salesman’s Samples

“Salesmans samples were a common item in the early 20th century, as salesmen needed a smaller version of their product to show off to retailers, and retailers in turn needed a way to demonstrate the features of larger items, which might need to be ordered from the manufacturer, to their customers.

Many salesman’s samples were highly detailed, with additional marketing copy pointing out important features of the product.” Collector’s Weekly

This model of an architectural table is a rare form of a Sunderland Cylinder table. Fabricated in mahogany with inlays of brass, it has two adjustable leaves along with two drawers for storage of architectural plans.

These English tilt top tables may have been uses as samples or they are apprentice pieces. Usually a little less refined in detail, apprentice pieces would have been the first efforts of students learning their craft. This is quite evident in the Victorian English chaise below.
